Plan Ahead!

It was at this moment that Terry, LarryD and Ray wondered if deciding to run the Twin Cities Marathon at the last minute was really a good idea.

Ran a 15.2 mile race last Saturday. Decided to run it on the Monday before. "Trained" on Tuesday and Wednesday, Carbo-loaded on Thursday, rested on Friday.

I was a moron.

I can see Terry huffing and puffing his way PAST the finish line, frantically continuing unto to an interstate, turning into a neighborhood, through his front porch and into his house, to delete a post he wrote last night or the day before:0)

I figured Mr.T was running from bloggers with issues. Some people take blogging waaaay to seriously.

Not wishing to brag, but in the days of my more svelte youth, the 80s, to be specific, I used to run 10K races, and finish them, believe it or not.

Free t-shirts was the attraction.

However my goal generally was 59:59 and I did reach that "lofty" pinnacle more often than not. But not by much.

I did run a mile once in the more respectable time of 7:35 or so, aided by a winsome lass pacing me whose stride and physique matched my stride and libido.

But, bringing it into the present, I was a witness today at the Twin Cities Marathon (which must be the event that caused this detour from spirituality here) to witness my 20 year old nephew, Patrick, run his second marathon in the very respectable time of 2 hours, 59 minutes and 34 seconds, which qualifies him for Boston, if he so chooses. I don't believe he has any of my genes, especially as he is up for membership in the geeky Tau Beta Pi honorary science/engineering fraternity (equivalent of Phi Beta Kappa) at the University of Minnesota, majoring in Materials Science (formerly known as metallurgy).

Forgive me for bragging of athletic achievements.

I would have done better if I hadn't run all the way from Michigan...

Ray, your nephew is to be commended. Ah, the things you can do when you're 20.

There is perhaps no better reminder that my youth is lost than recalling the days when I thought racing a 7:30 mile was slow. I'm lucky if I can run a quarter of a mile in that time frame now. Better for me to leave that kind of exertion to the younger set and settle for a good brisk walk.

Little Way

I'd be lucky to run a 15 minute mile these days. And there better be an ambulance right behind me. Asthma stopped me, but I didn't know that for several year and then I never bothered to start running again once I was equipped with inhalers.

God bless him, it's getting dark and scarey outside. I hope he can run really fast if persued. I hope he's not provoking strangers. Some people are super cranky and carry weapons. :o

Gasping, Belinda.

Fr. NP

I was talking about ancient history and my young nephew's current efforts. I've never run a marathon. Just 10K races back 30 years ago or so.
