Joey, Do You Like Movies About Gladiators?

The 300

Buffed, oiled, men with six-pack abs in loinclothes and capes and carrying big swords...I wonder what their target audience is?

Actually, as I was over communicating at the Library earlier today, I thumbed through Time Magazine and there was an article about that movie, wondering if it is the promise of things to come.

Apparently it was all done with no-name actors on a sound stage with "blue walls" and all the scenery, location shots and special effects were 100% computer created.

And, as to who the audience is, besides history geeks with pocket protectors, the producers will be watching closely to get the answer.

I suspect that it won't be long before "six pack abs" can be computer generated on 97 pound weaklings, too.

Rose (16 yrs old) has been waiting impatiently for this movie since it was first announced ... she and a friend (17 yrs old so they can handle the "R" rating) will be going this weekend.

Julie: I've heard it's extremely, graphically, violent.

I think that's what kids like today, and I guess girls, too.

Unless they figure that "The 300" will be where the boys are.

You know, when I was a soldier, we read and talked about the Battle of Thermipolae. Not at an acadamy, but in the barracks, (yep, I was enlisted scum).

Being in an airborne regiment, we looked up to the Spartans. They were a part of our soldierly heritage.

But, after all the reading about "oiled torsos" and "six pack abs" and "target audiences" I'm kinda afraid to go see it, 'cause somebody might see me--don't want to get lumped into the wrong demographic!

Besides, my soldierly six pack abs are buried under the detritus of many six packs these long years later.

But mostly, I just annoyed that such a small part of the population, <10%, can taint all of us with the imputation that they're normal and we're all in the closet or beset by some psychological phobia!

The target audience is probably fashion conscious young men. LOL!

LOL! I can see Fashion Week in Milan now: men in capes and loincloths. The new male must-have accessory will be a shield.

This is so Versace.
